Car of the Day - Maserati GS Zagato

Maserati and Zagato go together like pasta and wine, just a superb partnership. The 1954 Maserati A6G54 2000 is undoubtably one of the most beautiful cars ever designed. The partnership was revived in 2007 with the Maserati GS 2007 and while it is not in the same league as their 1954 effort it is still a beautiful and unique car.

Back in 2006 Zagato commenced a short but prolific new period in it’s history with the introduction of the Ferrari 575GTZ, it was followed by the Diatto Ottovu and Maserati GS Zagato Coupe in 2007, the Spyker C12 Zagato in 2008 as well as the Bentley Continental GTZ. All were designed along a common design language with features found across all the cars.

With the recent passing of Dr. Elio Zagato I have decided to do an ongoing sub-project documenting Zagato models,. this is the first COTD profile

The Maserati GS Zagato was commissioned by Paolo Boffi, an Italian entrepreneur in the furnishing and luxury design. Based on the Maserati GranSport Spyder, the wheelbase is 180mm shorter than the standard coupe. The Spyder underpinnings have been skinned with a two-seat touring hatch of all-aluminum construction..

The short rigid Spyder platform offers excellent handling and stability with its torsional rigidity designed around no roof..

A one-off Maserati with a Z on the wing is undoubtably a rare prize for any cognoscenti.. The car made its debut at the 2007 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este were the press shots featured here were taken.
